Sexciety
Bringing Party Back!
In a practice room at House of Hits in Sacramento, wallpapered with naked chicks and their own flyers, Sexciety unleashes their inner monsters. Well, party monsters that is. The band formed in 2006 but the current line-up is a fresh two months old.
Marshall Matthews, the now solitary guitar player in the band, is the catalyst around which this group was formed. Bryan Patton, the bass player, knew Matthews through practicing in the same rehearsal warehouse and fell into an audition after his band Keloid of eight years split up. Sammy Karland, lead vocalist, was found by a friend of sampler/backup vocalist Jeff Stevenson whom Matthews says he met “walking down the street” after Stevenson moved to Elk Grove from Santa Cruz.
Matthews had seen drummer Josh Thompson playing drums in his band Hoodlum Priest while the two were in high school. Years later Matthews had the chance to bring in Thompson as the drummer in his first gigging band. Patton regards the fate of the bands formation as “We got got a bunch of guys here that not only can party as hard as anybody that I know and still make it to practice three times a week.” Stevenson adds: “Wether I’m coherent or not, I’m here.”
Over the last two years the group has developed a reputation for living up to their duties as a metal band: Sex, Drugs and Rock n’ Roll. Just walking into their practice room you get the instant aura of debauchery and hard music.
However, they feel the last two years prepared them for 2008 to be more about business. Learning in 2007 that after parties should be “after the shows,” according to Patton.
They plan on recording an album this year since the last few recordings weren’t the quality they had hoped. They also have the possibility to do a video for one of their songs after they record.
The band has always taken promotion seriously. Always flyering for every show at other venues, posting bulletins like mad on MySpace, as well as offering a slew of merch to the fans at their shows.
When their own band started to pick up steam and they were attending other bands’ shows to promote, Matthews says ” There are a lot of bands (in the local scene) that are untapped. We would go out and promote and say ‘Dang there are so many good bands here’ and ‘What does it take to make a band go?’ and I think there’s a lot of good music but the bands aren’t promoting themselves enough.”
Matthews feels one of their promotional efforts of “getting drunk at bars and telling hella people to go works as well.”
Patton says that their new poster says it all: “Come Join The Party. Because people come to our shows and they don’t just see a band play.
They’re going to hang out with us. They’re going to have a drink with us. They can party and become a friend, being part of it. People can feel like they’re a part of this.”
So is Sexciety more than just a band name? Sure, that’s apparent with the scantly clad girls on every flyer and the banners that hang on their walls.
This band may have taken their moniker literal and hope their fans and friends will join the party. They also undeniably prove they’re worth the time with the hard driving, face-melting metal they dish out at every show.
They’re one of the bands looking for your vote at the Kennel Clubs Battle of the Bands in February and March. Check them out at www.sexciety.us
